Over two generations, the proportion of the white population in Detroit fell from 71% to 10%, a population decline of 94.2%. In 1960, of the 1,670,144 residents, 1,182,970 were white—70.83%. African Americans at that time numbered 482,223 (28.87% of the population). Over 60 years, the metropolitan population declined by 1,031,033 people (to 68,407), or 61.7%. The white population declined by 1,114,563 people, or 94.2%. Its proportion fell from 70.8% to 10.7%.
